
Set in the middle of the wide Amuri basin, Culverden is a delightful country town, with its golf course, country gardens, farmstays and bed & breakfasts. It’s a great place to experience rural New Zealand. Each October is time for the famous Christmas Country Fete showcasing arts, crafts, food, wine in a garden party atmosphere.
Rutherford Reserve is pleasant for picnics while to the south is the huge Balmoral Forest with its sheltered camping and picnic areas along the banks of the Hurunui River.
The Hurunui Hotel, built in 1868 to accommodate weary drovers, is a historic landmark in North Canterbury and a great place for refreshments. Close by, in replicated historic stables, the Black Hills Heritage Collection offers an insight into the life of early settlers with historic items and crafts on show within renovated stables built as they were in the late 1800s.
