Few places in the world boast such natural wonders as those of Kaikoura. This seaside town, midway between Christchurch and Picton, and just 2 hours from Hanmer Springs, is overlooked by majestic mountains, often snow-capped, rising spectacularly from the Pacific Ocean. This unique combination of ocean and mountains leaves visitors in awe and is equally as stunning as Mount Cook or Milford Sound.

The convergence of subtropical and sub-antarctic ocean currents in deep undersea canyons provides an abundantly rich habitat for marine mammals and birdlife. Kaikoura is renowned as the best place in the world to see sperm whales all year round as well as an amazing range of seabirds very close to land, including five varieties of great albatross. Visitors can also interact with dolphins, seals and numerous other species.

Abundant fishing grounds, surfing, diving and kayaking provide a broad range of marine based activities. Back on land there is plenty to choose from - coastal & bush walks, wine tasting, quad biking and golf. Historically, Kaikoura is fascinating with artefacts from Maori pa sites and Kaikoura’s whaling history preserved at the Museum and historic Fyffe House.
